Can threads PLEASE stop getting closed?

You know what I am seeing here? Those in a huff because their thread got closed, agree that the others should have been, but not their own.

When a thread is closed could we have a reason why it was closed, So the mod is doing the last post in the topic before its closed
And then we get this?
I think some people are just having some fun with the power. The "I can get the last word then close the thread so I have the last word" mentality.
I guess we can't please everyone. :tired2:

Mods got a complain from a certain individual about the gun thread.

Here's what I got:

may be you must check this thread... so scary... about kill someone with gun, knive, etc...

I wouldn't have closed it myself, but meh. Seems the majority of the mods agree that it needs to stay closed :)

You pleased one, but not all

If they did'nt like it then they should not read it

No I have noticed that too,
Instead of giving a reason the Mod will give there point of view then close it
Thats more annoying than closing it
If you feel the need to post befor closing it shouldnt it be a reason why and not personal thoughts?

Just my 2 cents on where heymrdj is coming from.

No, that's just silly.. Although some people here are complaining about it because THEIR thread got closed, but that is certainly not the case with everyone.

Unless there is swearing, personal abuse, sexually degrading/pornographic material, I don't see the need for threads to get closed. If something goes off topic, does it really matter all THAT much, as long as the discussion is kept clean? I was under the impression that's what 'General Discussion' was for .. debating, going off on a tangent, exploring issues. I would personally like to see the Virginia shooting thread reopened, as there was some interesting points of view and debating happening there..

It received this final post from Jan:

It just did.

We could debate the issue indefinitely, but the reality is 32 innocent people died at the hands of a gunman. I sincerely hope they rest in peace. Condolences to their families, friends, school mates, families of similar crimes and anyone else who is affected by this in any way. I think it has reached world wide proportions of people affected, one way or another.

And then was closed. Very frustrating when I for one had been reading through and was formulating a reply/speculation in regards to what others had to say. There have been numerous other threads just in the last week or so, too, that have been closed under similar circumstances.

I have noticed one thing. Ever since we got the new mods, we have had a rash of closings. I think some people are just having some fun with the power. .

I think this unfounded accusation is a huge insult to all the moderators who work hard to keep the forum running.
:devious2:

Nope, not at all.

I don't think its the new mods. I think as they are new they would be too scared to close a thread at the moment in case they shouldn't. This issue is down to the old timers :p.

Its also rude not to reply to someones private message. I expected more from yourself. At least Dan has the respect to send me a PM giving reasons but even though I thank him for that I expect yourself to give the reasons as your the one who closed it in the first place.

I again request it to be opened & a reply to my PM. What are you trying to avoid?

Thank you.

When I first joined up I made this,
http://freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2177969

Please relook at the idea
ITS NOT FOR PORN BUT FOR REASONS LIKE THIS that it would be a good idea
15+ with a warning saying some posts may be offencivie as this forum is less modarated if you dont agree with something said please leave this forum Etc.... ends the issues of people complaining about threads and ends the issues of people complain about closing threads.
Make it a none post count forum too so "spamish" posts dont matter.

That idea solves every issue everyone has just been winging about including me :p

Totally.

I wouldn't say it's unfounded.

I don't, for one minute, want to accuse you guys of doing a bad job or insult the mods.. In fact, you could almost say that some mod/s have been doing TOO good a job :p .

May I ask, Craig, what thread you are referring to that was closed? (Sorry if the link is here already, I read a lot at work and miss stuff sometimes :) )

We have "The longest thread ever" where we don't really moderate unless someone is spamming, attacking other members or someone reports a post.

General discussions needs to be moderated. Removing the post count from that section didn't work when we tried it some years ago. Less members posted and it became less active. If we have General discussions where posts count and another section where posts don't count and aren't being moderatad actively, I think most people will be posting in General discussions anyway. I could be wrong about that, but that's my 2 cents.

Peo, I didnt say a thread I said a forum Or a subforum
1 Thread cant handle everything!
I think a offtopic forums would be the way to goo with or without postcount
Since latley to be honest General discussions has become really crap

Post count is meaning less it is there to say how many posts you have posted
It seems Od to me on why it upsets people so much they need to remove posts and close threads becuse its become "spamish"

I know that ones only one of the reasons threads get closed but to me, well it seems a very pointless one

You could always have a 4 week trial on a offtopic forums and see if it gets used and what happens then decide at the end of it

Either way Fact remains that peoples threads are getting closed against there wishes
When alot of the time the OP hasnt even done anything wrong it was just some other person,
I also think that if the OP dont mind the thread getting offtopic then there really is no issue with it

Just ideas anyway

Cya :)

I think the new mods are just getting carried away, they'll find the right groove eventually.

I would like to see anyone producing some real evidence of new moderators closing more threads than old moderators.

Wish we could. But the admin has it set up so that it doesn't show who closed threads, which is also rediculous, because blame can't be put where it needs to be when wrongs are done.

So what you guys are saying is, since us new mods came on board, threads are being locked and no threads were being locked before then?
Get real bud.

I haven't locked a thread since the first day.

Not like you to bend the words that people say. Threads have always been locked, there is just a rash of locking now. It just so happens that we took on new mods, and these closings started happening. Could be coincidence, but it also may not be.

Some of the admins and mods on here take the foolish, prideful, and self-arrogant view that this is "my forum and we'll do as we please." Its like it is mis-understood that when you own a forum, you are for the most part a slave to your members. Now the request of the members is fairly simple. To stop being such tenderfoots and allow some articles to be discussed. It is your duty as an owner of the forum (the admins that is) to listen to the requests of the members, and act not according to their feelings, but according to what is best for the forums population. So I recommend that instead of slighting off this thread, some genuine discussion actually happens for once on the forum, and the dispute gets resolved.

PS: Nugi, I'd appreciate it if instead of posting baby remarks like "Jeez ur an idiot/ Nugi" in my reputation system, that you actually have the gall and come in here and post that. Then again, you're probably ignoring that because you would get negative rep as well. You act like a coward, and in in every thread we have disputed in, you have continued to act as a coward. I guess in the end that's all you'll ever be to this forum.
