What do people expect for nothing these days?

I see so many posts on this forum nowadays, where people are asking for ad-free hosting, coupled with FTP. Asking for ad-free hosting is already asking for a lot, but there are even others who will throw a scripting language, a database, and other features into the mix, and yet they still insist that they aren't really asking for much. One guy even asked for no file-size restrictions! Most of them don't have bad intentions, but I think that they don't have any idea how difficult it is to run a free host. People expect more and more from free hosts, and the quality of free hosts haven't been able to rise to meet those demands.. :(

Here are some examples:

http://freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42522

:confused2

maybe a teaser "sticky" post would help?
something like: "click here if you want a free host with 1Gb space and 100Gb transfer" but the post is actually just a "what can you reasonably expect from free hosting" one. :D

I know what we need....

We need a sticky thread which displays todays reasonable free hosting specifications. :smile2:

People will read it and will be able to adjust their request.

I think the majority of people looking for free hosting are young people that are unable to make use of a credit card/paypal to purchase hosting

There are a lot of trustworthy hosts who will accept cheque or money order, so that is no excuse ;)

i agree with Loon....nice approach

secondly if ad-free hosting is such a great problem to Hosts, they must waive off this offer...they shud say that "the best we can do 4 u and u can do 4 us is, put a text link" or whatever the Hosts feels aprropraite....
then there should not be offers like this that un metered Unlimited Bandwidth, Unlimited Space, No Banners/ Pop-ups etc etc
they can offer these services in random packages skipping any 1 of above listed...

the major reason is also that webmasters or newbies get nothing in return (mostly!!!) and they do not want to spend a Penny!

So u see...every 1 is compelled...in some cases users & in other cases the hosts....

if this continues then designers whether professionals or Amateur must play Nearer My God to Thee! and sign off from the internet...

See, that's the problem...they won't read it. People come here and look at a forum full of posts with the mentality well I haven't made my specific request yet so surely there's no way that I'd have to read all these other ones. I remember coming to forums with that kind of mentality, so it's true, or was true 2 or 3 years ago :classic2:

Yes that's true but alot of people are not aware of that, and it's still not an option for everybody.

I also sometimes wonder what these people are planning to do with this 1/200mb of space and "unlimited" bandwidth that they "need" so badly

A friend of mine runs a website that takes about 30-40,000 visits a week, it's also a download site and the majority of visitors are downloading files of around 1-5mb and in total they use around 35gb of bandwidth a month

now that's quite an extreme amount of data transfer especially considering this is just a hobby site, not a business of any kind so it really puzzles me how people seem to believe they would ever use anymore than around 10% of that (3-4gb) :confused4

Same goes for space, what exactly are people doing with 1/200mb? are they storing 10 copies of each file incase some get deleted or something lol because 80% of sites i see on free hosting, don't appear as if they could be using anymore than 20/30mb of space

There is NO Reason a normal person could not find a good free provider for him or herself.

There are only a couple of ways that you wont find a good free host:

1. Illegitimate sites: Sites that have TV Episodes, Free Games, Warez or mp3's will have a hard time finding a free host.

2. Worthless forum or Post-Script (PHPNuke etc): Comon if you were really serious about starting a forum you would definately just link to a remotely hosted one. If you had an actual good script that people wouldnt mind hosting, you would email neohost or fairmont.nu

3. File Hosting: People want to distribute large files and not only that, they usually want to link them to other sites. That is a nono.

4. Don't know what they are asking for: Some people just do not want there sites going down so they make unrealistic demands without knowing they dont need all that crap.

5. Too Lazy: If you don't want to e-mail someone to get your site approved or you just have to have instant verification and sign-up, too bad.

If none of these apply, than you should NEVER EVER have to look further than the host faq v4 to find appropriate free hosting.

Jan, is there any way you can delete all the superfluous posts in that thread? I think the "42 replies" is a bit intimidating to new users. It would be best if they were all combined into one. :)

Striker hit the bullseye. People these days want hosting for nothing. Either this means that they want ad-free hosting, but they don't want to work for it (i.e. post on forums). The darn abusers have also killed off several great free hosts. It's just sad that the Internet has to be run by such vices as warez and porn.

And I'm one of those people who don't support Kazaa either. ;)

That's the trouble with things these days. Sure people know that an Ice Cream Shop isn't going to stay in bussiness if they give away free Ice Cream and they know you can't steal things but when they see a computer they suddenly think it's some sort of magic box and that everything is free and piracy is a constitutional right. I am sure that no one in there right mind gets something abosolutely free like a gameboy in a promotional contest that didn't cost anything to enter and then complain that they want free games to go with it.

I'm not saying that these people are bad but I would bet that some of you are used to reading posts like this.
Hello, I would like a hosting account with the following:
200megs or more of space
20gb in bandwidth
No Ads
and CPANEL with the works.
and I've already tried a few other hosts but can you believe that they charge for this?

sometimes somebody can't make advantage of all the space ,maybe just waste of free resouces, somebody really needed can't get that . anyone think that you need 200m free space to build homepage or just work a formus , and you have the ability to build it and it can work for a long time ?

To simply answer the subject of the thread: What do people expect for nothing these days?

Everything.

People want websites, but they don't want to pay for them. It is estimated that by the end of the this year there will be 41 billion websites. 39 billion of those 41 will be useless personal pages.

but some good website came from personal website , i feel free space is just for the people who need it not for who collect it

I am not dissing on personal sites by any means, but I don't think people with personal sites need php/mySQL/ASP/CGI/FTP/Telnet/100mb space/Unlimted Transfer/CPanel/etc.

What ever happened to good old geocities or your ISP hosting?

i think so , they need php/mySQL/ASP/CGI/FTP/Telnet/100mb space/Unlimted Transfer/CPanel/etc. they all understand php ,asp and perl programing?
maybe the real free host will be dead one day

They don't. They hear about it all the time, and they think it would be "cool" just to have those features.

Either that or they want to host a forum, a portal, or some other script that will end up in the dust.

every one is a newbie and non-proffessional when he/she starts...

no one is a born-webmaster knowing php/perl etc

they keep on testing and trying...and what do u know...theymay own another Yahoo.com one day ;)
