How much bandwith do you think Microsoft uses/has?

MATRIX

Internet Solutions
NLC
As the title says, they are releasing SP2 and they are expecting more than 100 Million Downloads... So, how much bandwith do you think they have?

My guesses are 145,000Mbps

i'd say 1TB/s (if it exists, but then again it's microsoft where "anything is possible"..unless that's from the HP ads :S)

Any ideas how big SP2 is?

No idea, but I do know that they run linux servers :)

Actually, If you were to use a program such as nmap you would discover that microsoft uses Windows 2003 servers.

As for bandwidth, I would guess that they have multiple OC-192 connections.

From Microsoft:
72 servers host general Web content, 11 servers host SQL, 54 servers respond to site searches, 91 servers handle download requests (along with thousands of global caching servers), and 14 servers host FTP content.

Here are just a few facts about Microsoft.com. (Figures are rounded and are not exact.)

Web Statistics
(for month of May 2004)

• 165 million unique users

• 1,201 million page views

• 590 million successful downloads

Content
• 109 GB of content

• 3.2 million files total

• 1.4 million HTML, ASP, and ASPX files

• 1.2 million GIF or JPG image files

• Approximately 575 GB of files available for download.

• Content created around the clock. Approximately 3.5 GB of new and updated content published daily.

• More than 1100 databases support an average of 600 concurrent connections during peak business hours

Network/Hardware
• 12 dedicated gigE uplinks provide a total of 12,000 MB uplink capacity.

• Multiple mixed OC48/192 networks providing connectivity to the Internet.

• Running on HP Proliant DL580 with four Intel Xeon/2.0 Ghz processors, 4 GB memory, 140 GB content capacity, and 50 GB log capacity each.

Software
• The Web servers (IIS 6.0) run on Windows Server 2003.

• The search servers receive 100 requests per second and run on a multi-layer architecture that includes SharePoint Server.

• The database servers run Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.

Isn't Microsoft using Rackspace? I don't know how much connectivity Rackspace has to the Internet, but 12,000mbps seems close. I wonder if Microsoft shares their connectivity with Rackspace's other customers or gets their own dedicated pipes in their datacenter.

I'm not sure, but heck I wonder how much do they pay for those 12,000Mb per month... If I was them I would build up a datacenter for it, but who knows Bill Gates...
