Oh, I disagree. Hotmail was free. Yahoo! Mail was free. Google has obviously shown that you can very easily compete with free, and I'd be interested to see what other companies come out with to compete with Google.
From other reviews (okay, review) that I've read about Google Spreadsheet, it's late to the game, and there are already quite a few similar products on the market that are better than Google Spreadsheet. I don't use spreadsheets at all, but it'll be interesting to see if Google can pull a Gmail with an online office suite, or if it will fail in the face of better, more entrenched competetors. Of course, buying them all out (Writely, namely) does help.
