Best 1st-person shooter game?

Hello

now dont laugh but the last 1st-person-shooter game i played was doom#1, but as i wanna buy a new game like it, but modern, i'm asking here for members opinions, on whats the best '1st-person' game i should get.
- all it needs is to have action+adventure an i'll be happy :)

if you want a good story and adventure/action.. i recommend halo or half-life

unreal and unreal 2 aer also good
 
If you want just plain deathmatch fps action, get quake 3. While I don't really like just plain Quake, their is Capture the flag, which I dig, and Freeze Tag, which is good. I used to have a pirated copy of quake, until it stopped working online, so I went and bought it and the Team Arena expansion pack. Needless to say, I installed them both, played for another week, and then quit...and started playing Counter-Strike off a friends CD-key with a copy of his CD. So, after a while, I went and bought half-life, and then sorta stopped playing CS after I bought it...

But, yea...It really depends on your comps specs. Quake3 ran good on my comp, but Half-life doesn't (..don't know why, HL is on the Q2 engine...it's my ATI card).

But, I don't mind Quake. It's good plain fun. And Doom...is coming out soon. Is it Doom 3 or 4, and is it out yet?
 
their internet play and pay plans for half-life 2 sound pretty crap, its also a pity that doom 3 is a retelling of doom 1.

i'm not a fan of scary games like doom3, but i can't wait for its mods :)
 
As far as free, stand-alone games go.. i'd say RTCW: Enemy Territory.

there's just so many categories!
 
bikini karate babes is my favourite fighting game.

as for first person shooter... Doom I or Wolfenstein 3D.

I haven't played any first person shooters since those two came out, so...

The pay plan is only if you want to download games through Steam. HL2 MP is still going to be like, $50 or something, one time retail.
