XP Pro OEM and Retail?

What's the difference between the two? The OEM is $200+ and the retail is almost twice as expensive... And they are both sold in retail stores and both are full versions... What's the difference?

OEM is supposed to be sold with a computer system ( Or parts of one) Also, unlike retail it has no fancy box or manual.

an online store is selling CDs which are OEM... photoshop, visual basic, etc... at super low prices but they said they should be for home use only.

I don't think it's legal for a store to sell OEM versions "as is", although a lot of stores get around it by telling you you can buy it just as long as you buy some piece of hardware at the same time as well (keyboard, mouse, HD etc).
As far as you're concerned, it's the same product as retail and if the store says it's ok then why not? :)

I think the OEM version of Photoshop is actually Photoshop LE (Limited Edition) which isn't the same as the full product?

they say its the full product only that you cant use it for business use which I think is useless. i think everyone who would buy an original copy of photoshop would probably use it for business otherwise he could have get warez version or a trial.

The forum on another website said that's its legal though... Do you guys have the OEM or Retail? I heard that both are the same except that the OEM doesn't get support from Microsoft.

Are you referring to PhotoShop or XP Pro?

If it's a manufacturer's OEM (like Compaq's or Dell's) then the installation might have 1-2 extra screens but after install it will act exactly the same as a retail copy. Service packs etc will work just as well as with retail.

Just curious, what version of XP you use? OEM? Retail?
Neither :p It's an upgrade actually.
My notebook came with an XP Home OEM though, but I replaced it with the XP Pro upgrade as well.

I checked prices here and it's about $90 for XP Home OEM (vs $235 for retail) and $140 for XP Pro OEM (vs $340 for retail) so the price difference you said sounds about right.

The OEM is the full version, it just won't come in a box. That's the difference. I don't think you get a manual either. Come to think of it, I've never seen a "manual" for windows. Do such things exist?

Compare the difference between OEM and retail as either buying a product in a wholesale or in a regular store. You're buying the exact same thing in both stores except the wholesale store won't put some wrapping paper or a pretty bow around it :p.
OEM is cheaper because it doesn't have a printed box or the big "tutorial poster" and Microsoft doesn't have to offer support for it because that's something the OEM would take care of and OEMs probably buy thousands of copies at a time as well which would give them an additional discount.
They're both the same thing, one is just more dressed up and pricier.

I think Windows 3.11 was the last one to have a decent manual, all the others I've seen since then basically explained how to use the F1 key and go from there. It has the major features highlighted with a very basic description on how to use them but nothing beyond that.
