I don't usally vote in these .. buts PORTLAND.CO.UK SUCKS :D

I have my domain hosted there and most of there pages on there site have HTTP 500 internal errors and HTTP 404 error pages ... and i can't access my site .. and there servers are totally over crowded :)
 
Why are Brinkster, Angelfire/Tripod, and Geocities in this poll? Those hosts aren't really all that bad. Sure, I don't use the last three and use Brinkster only for my Nine Hole Golf download page (the demo of it uses a completely java script generated page, so it can't have server inclusion of ad code), but the only reason I don't is because they don't offer enough webspace for my .wav site and I'd risk running out of data transfer as well (I don't monitor my site's traffic at all). For those sites that don't need much of either, they don't suck. It all depends on what your site needs.
 
I've used all Geocities, Angelfire, and Tripod. They aren't the worst webhost's ever, people just clarify them that they're bad because, (1) The ads, and (2) No scripting.

People just want everything, people want every host to be a flatface!:rolleyes:

Thats true. Everyone just expects too much. I voted for other on that list because none of those hosts are bad but they all have catches in them. Like Portland only has 100MB Bandwith, No scripting from Geocities, etc.

Man, that's stupid, especially the complaint about ads. The majority of free webspace hosts have ads, for crying out loud. As for the scripting part, not everyone NEEDS server side scripting. My website doesn't use any form of server side scripting.

pfff...what do some people consider as a good host then? I only see a listing of good free webhost providers...

Is a good host, one which offers all server side scripting support, with absolutely no adverts whatsoever, not forgetting 101% up-time?

The only one which I kinda wouldn't go with would be Portland, but that's only because when you sign up, you didn't receive a confirmation email. :smile2:
 
I said Web1000 (duh), Angelfire/Tripod and Portland. They're all very bad. Geocities is actually very good (there were perfect when they still had FTP) but I need more now so I'm going paid. It all depends on what you need...if you need scripting, then Geoecities isn't very good, but it doesn't suck and it's not bad, it's just not right for your needs.

They have pornographic error 404 pages and they sometimes tend to show up even if the page/file exists (sometimes the page will load, sometimes the error will pop just because the server's struggling). I wouldn't recommend them to anyone except for porno webmasters.
 
There are many worse hosts than these. Those that suck you in with false promises and 2 days later you suddenly have no site. The hosts in the poll have been been around for ages, some many years. Don't knock them :devious2: You might just need them one day when another wannabe goes down the gurgler.
