What's with 'mart'?

JasonS

What goes here?
NLC
Since Wal-mart, there's been companies popping up with 'mart' in their names?

Infomart
KMart

What's the point in it? Does 'mart' mean something special in the states or...

KMart was around long before WalMart, and ive also seen the lesser known S-Mart in a few locations.

there is a gas station around here called MinitMart [kinda like the hess gas stations]

I think it's a variation of "market" or "marketplace" ... something along those lines. Anyone care to confirm?

Thank you wiki!

Kmart: Founded 1899 as the S. S. Kresge Company (Detroit, Michigan), 1962 as Kmart

Wal-Mart: Founded 1962

So Kmart itself is older but the name Kmart is the same age

mart
1. market; trading center; trade center.
2. a building, center, or exposition for the sale of goods by manufacturers and wholesalers to retail merchants.
3. Archaic. a fair.
4. Obsolete. bargain.
Origin:
1400–50; late ME < MD mar(c)t market

You have to remember in 1962 there was just the one Wal-Mart, but there would have been hundreds/thousands of K-Marts.

Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart?
Now here's the tricky part
Oh, won't you rhyme with me?
Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart?
Their floors are sticky-mart!
They made Dad sicky-mart!
Let's hurl a bricky-mart!
That Kwik-E-Mart is really - d'oh!
