War Driving

cool! i have before with my lap top and once or twice with my Zaurus (using a program call "Kismet:) i wardrove around santa-maria,california (a fairly small town compared to some) and got alot of networks. kismet is cool... it gives you alot of info. one of my favorites is Encryption Type. although it doesnt crack Wep or any other encryption....i figured that everyone would be using wep, but only one was.

Kismet doesn't crack WEPs?
I assumed it would seeing as it's OS X fork, Kismac, does several different types of cracking.

And it's amazing how many people don't use WEP, leave their SSID as default, and use default users/pass.
I'd say about 75% here don't, even big businesses, such as BC Systems, who do all the local government crap.

Anyways, when you all go out war-driving what kind of setups do you use?

When I go with my buddy we have his cadillac, with me in the back with my iBook, and him in the front with his Compaq (with a GPRS for extra fun), and a spare power supply.
I've found that using more than one machine allows you to find channels that one machine may have missed while hopping channels.

1x car
1x dell laptop
2x batteries
and a SMC wifi card.

I got some biz's unproctected Cisco wireless router today :p 7 more today :)

I go with my friend with:

-my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600)
-orinco gold wireless card
-14DB gain antenna
-USB GPS Module

[EDIT]I can pick up a wireless signal from about 6 blocks away and have an excellent signal from 3. In my town I have found 1 encrypted signal and that is on the military base. [/EDIT]
