Using .net without .com

The domain name I want currently leave me with .net, .org, and .info while .com has ben taken. The .com is actually only parked being unused. Will there be any disadvantage for me in the future if I got so much traffic with let's say .net if I don't have the .com? Will I loose many visitors to .com? Should I pick another domain for which .com is available?

Please share your opinions. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend getting a domain where the other TLDs are available, if you get a high traffic site then some people might type in yourdomain.com by mistake and you'll lose the traffic then. Regular visitors to your site will remember the .net but you have to think of others that have just been told about your site, they could forget...

Or, you could contact the owner of the .com and ask if he is using the domain, if not maybe offer him slightly higher than the renewal fee for it!

i don't think getting a .com is neccesarily.. fer instance aethereality.net is a great graphics site.. and i think there might be a .com of the same name, but it doesn't matter, as long as your visitors like what you have, no matter if its a .net, .org or .com, they will continue to visit.

Everyone thinks .com is the best... Well it's not, I like .net just as much as .com...

There is no disadvantage of using a .net, you wont get less traffic, you wont get more, it's just a personal preferance...

aplus.net has been quite successful using the .net only. someone has the .com version

Availnetworks.net is ours and availnetworks.com is owned by another company unrelated to what we do. no big yank

Yeah, same here, I own a domain name for a webhost, some dude owns the same domain name as a .com, but, he has yet to change the template for the site :p

I think it only depends on what your site is about.
If really the .com domain is taken and the expiry date is long after, get other TLDs.

Since most people these days still aren't computer smart, when you say your companies name is like DinosHotdogs or something they will think "How about I visit them on the web" and they will automatically type in DinosHotdogs.com, its very hard to get a good .com these days since that generation of the .com sweep has ended, and all the good ones have been grabbed. Keep looking into other ways to make your site, or if you can even change your name so you can find a .com available.

actually it depends on what yu use the site for.. is it something related to commercial usage? or is it network?

Thanks for your comments guys. I like .net as well as much as I like .com. But I have an impression that if someone remember a domain name for a website but is not sure whether it is .com or .net they will try .com first. I think using .net is not a problem as long as the .com counterpart is not exactly the same type of website. But if otherwise then it will be a head to head competition.

I will use it for a network website.
