Windows isn't included so they're still making money on the deal.

It's a Celeron with onboard graphics... we're not talking about a high-end machine.

mobo - $40
cpu - $90
ram - $35
hdd - $50
cd-rw - $20
case - $25
speakers/keyboard/mouse - $15
=$275

Of course they also get wholesale prices and I don't... so they can get the parts cheaper than I can. Obviously they're aren't going to be selling at-cost.
 
Yeah people just see a nice case and then they think that all the components in there are good.
For £250 which is about $400 sometimes theres 3.0ghz 1 gig ram and 200 gb harddrive.

which would be better,

intel celeron D, 256kb L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB

or

amd athlon xp 3000+, 512kb L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB

Correction:

1. Always choose your own parts.
2. Know what applications your system will be running (which will determine which arch you buy). Intel and AMD fanboys are both wrong.
