I've been a member here for a LONG time.... and recently decided to check it out again. All I can say is, "Wow." This place is nothing like it used to be. It seems like nothing more than a place for people to dump off copy and paste ads and it appears there's very little actual "discussions" actually going on anymore. Such a shame really because this place used to be the ----.

Welcome back! I can't say I remember you, maybe that's because of 28 posts during 13 years as a member... After all those years we're still here to welcome you back. Isn't that amazing?

Lol, welcome back!

I can't recall you either, you are right about the spam, its a shame.
But there are still about 15-20 or so active members here that aren't here to spam.

Well atleast that means most rude people are gone :p
It´s why i choose not to post much here.

I feel the same way a little bit, quite low interaction with web host and people who ask for it.

Free hosting is nothing like it used to be. The legitimate uses of free hosting have been severely limited, due to Facebook and other social media. Free hosting used to be huge, with people hosting personal sites, uploading their pictures, etc. Now you don't need a host for that. The majority of folks using free hosting are uploading porn, illegal files, movies, sending spam, etc.

Just not what it used to be unfortunately...

these are the reasons I NEVER offer free hosting. You want hosting, pay... that is my belief.

IMO, if someone cant pay $100 or less / year for hosting, then they shouldnt have a site. If they need a free site, it means they have no money, which typically would mean they dont have a job, which would suggest that they are trying to find a quick way to make money on the web, which suggests that they will be doing spam, torrents, or porn. so, that is my reasoning. I am sure there are people that arent doing anything illegal or risky, but again, if they cant afford such a small amount of money for an entire year, then they just dont really need the site. that is just my opinion though.

There are still a lot of young people around the world who have a very limited budget and just want to learn more about creating a website (php, mysql, css etc). Facebook, twitter, tumblr etc can't offer that. But I agree, compared to how it used to be, it looks like there is a high percentage of free hosting users with bad intentions nowadays.

Yeah, there are a lot of those kids who waste money on other stuff and still demand free hosting. I think it's mainly because they can't see the benefit of paying money for something that is available for free. To us it's obvious that it's much better to pay some money to get a stable host.

There are also a huge amount of young people in let's say India, China, Africa etc who really don't have $10 to spend on hosting. They get free internet access through school and wish to learn more about creating websites. Maybe some free hosts can respond with info on typical sites they host nowadays and where users come from? We get a lot of visitors from India for instance, in second place after US.

And unfortunately, that's even worse for those folks, as that's where the heaviest abuse comes from. Most providers won't even touch those countries.

I somewhat agree with this. I'm still relatively new to free hosting industry and I haven't experienced the past by myself but nowadays it seems like most people are signing up for free hosting just to abuse it. Free hosting is often more anonymous because you don't have to submit your personal or payment details and you basically have nothing to lose if you get suspended.

Of course, there are also legit customers who are looking for a cheaper solution because of their budget. This includes mostly small communities and charity websites. Some people want to take the advantage of a free host to test their services before upgrading for a paid plan. They might also need just a small and simple website with low resources and they don't feel like paying too much compared to what they use. Then there is the rest who simply can't or don't want to use their credit cards or bank accounts for online transactions.

I used to lurk here a lot and read all of the posts. These days, it seems that activity on this site has came to a screeching halt. I see the "new posts" are only a page or two each time I sign on, and even worse, they appear to just be the same hosting offer ads that are posted continuously by the same users. Just sayin'.

I heard there is a huge file you can download with almost all sites from Geocities. I imagine lots of animated gif images combined with animated dark backgrounds. :)
