the Java applet from hell

I was researching a math problem earlier and came across one particular .edu site that featured a Java applet showing a graphical representation of the problem. It started loading fine enough but midway my PC just powered down.
When I powered it up again Win2k wouldn't start anymore.. about 3-4 seconds into the boot process it would just reboot itself over and over. Safe mode still worked but safe mode with network support suffered the same reboot fate. Nothing I tried got it working again.
If anyone ever told me a web page disabled their Win2k I probably wouldn't believe him/her for a second and would blame it on something else but I guess I know different now :confused2.
I took advantage to finally try out WinXP instead of reloading my latest Ghost image and can't say I'm very much impressed with it so far. It is running a lot faster then I would have expected though.

Moral of the story: Sun is right to sue Microsoft for it's Java implementation because it wasted half a day of my life installing WinXP and 5 minutes of your life for reading my rant :D

theres a website that if you go to, and your on xp, it disables your comp

(actually, the website is in xp itself)

I haven't had those problems at all, and certainly not recently because
1) I've stopped using Windows for web browsing and pretty much anything
2) Java won't install :(

it is things like the above that prompt me to disable java/js in my browser, and not use it in any of my sites

JavaScript is okay, and my uncle works at Sun so I can't say Java is bad without being disowned ;) but yeah I don't use Java/JS in my sites and I'd disable JS in my browser if the sites I vist didn't use it so much...

Javascript is fine (except for the fact that it gave birth to popups :angry2: ). What I did turn off long ago is ActiveX components since it's code that will run locally with no protection whatsoever. IMO Java lost much of its use when Java/VB-script got designed and grew more popular but it's still ok for some things (like displaying graphical functions). I never turned it off since it's "supposed" to run in a protected shell where it shouldn't be able to do any harm.

there are no trojans :( its just anti-viruses being ghey. mcafee put digicrime.com on its "dont go here" list

I use Norton Corp Edition..

No one them work but "rewrite history" mozilla gives me funny messages about how it is unsafe and a bug in the script, how they are trying to fool me, ect.. Hehe

why does Windows have all those builtin crash features??

It would crash in previous versions of IE, however, it doesn't happen in v5 and v6 of IE
