The ads on Google Groups

I find the sponsored ads on Google Groups to be a bit... out of place. Yesterday were two ads for a book called "Get Better Sex!" on alt.movies.kubrick. Now it's "Research homosexuality at the world's largest online library." The mind boggles trying to make a connexion to either one.

I wonder what will be advertised tomorrow?

I thought Kurbick was renowned for putting more 'sex' in some of his movies, such as Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, etc. etc.

I think the connection would be made when people searching for more information or pictures regarding kubrick's sex scenes (which I imagine a large proportion would be), they can click the ads... instead of the diehard fans who probably ignore them anyway...

But if you object to adverts like that being placed on the group, you can contact Google here.

Now it's "Lesbianism - Research lesbianism at the world's largest online library." paired with "Moon Landing Hoax - Did NASA really land on the moon? Unprecedented Video Proof Uncovered".

It doesn't bother me, it's only a text ad, I just find it bizarre.

Nearly all (well, I'll go ahead and say "all", I can't think of any examples otherwise right now) sex in Kubrick movies is intended to disgust, not excite. People were disappointed by Eyes Wide Shut. Most were expecting some high-budget porno staring a naked Nicole Kidman, what they got didn't settle well. I suppose if they're American they could be looking for the uncensored orgy sequence, but really, you don't have to go to any great extent to find pornography on the Internet. (On that topic, having seen both versions, I think the censored one actually fits in more and flows better with the rest of movie. I still wish Warner Brothers had included both on the DVD, but I don't think the added cloaked figures detract from it at all.) If they were British they could be looking for the uncensored soundtrack, but that doesn't have anything to do with sex.

Actually, the newsgroup is more political right now than it is oriented toward Kubrick films. I suppose it's always been a little like that, but it's been a hundred times more so since Bush II.

I wonder what the moon landing has to do with it?

I would sincerely hope Google would have a little better targeting system than that.

There's a third ad now! "The Planet X Conspiracy - The only documentary of it's kind Is Planet X inhabited and inbound?"

This is starting to be fun.
