Someones offering Free VPS

Theres a hosting company who are offering. 30GB of Storage and 1/2 a terrabyrte od b/w. This is the same spec as a small/medium vps. This is just insane, overeselling like this should be disallowed here?

We all know thats impossible to offer for free so I guess we'll leave it to that insane host and to its uneducated hostees :)

Zac

and yet, there is another person who is offering 5gb and 1tb of bw, apparently they have plenty of satisfied free customers but i physically cant understand how you can offer 1tb for free,

This is just a marketing gimmick. Of course they are not capable of providing 1tb bandwidth to every user, and most likely your account will be eliminated if you start using too much bandwidth. They rely on the fact that most hosted websites won´t use even 100mb bandwidth.

But anyone who knows what theyre about knows they cant offer that anyway,
ie they only attract small sites run by new admins. These sites wont make them much money from ads, and with the bigger admins who might be considering taking them on, they will get a bad reputation.

so either way, by overselling that much the host loses. someone needs to talk sense to them

iv had this fight with the mod's but yet they still belive overselling is ok and unmeterd bandwdith isnt ;)
so its not banned

Well,

Unmetered bandwidth does exist and it's , and so keep in mind, it is POSSIBLE to offer any amount of bandwidth, now whether it's actually possible to use that much, is another matter altogether.

Those are right in saying, that this attracts people who don't know much, who just look at it, and say, "wowowowwowo, look at all that juicy bw!!!", without knowing, that they won't be able to use all of it.

Of course, it's also a bad idea to offer a lot of bandwidth, as it leads to users abusing this privilege, and starting websites, which have as a primary or secondary purpose to host large files, or large collections of smaller files, to be downloaded by a wide audience.

Overselling....I remember the first time I read up on overselling. I remember a very good saying about it, "If you do it right, it can be a very good thing, if you don't know what you're doing, than you'll ruin everything".

Most overselling host know that nobody going to use that space becouse they make the TOS that way and thats why nobody going to use 1tb bandwidth. So, that's why they offer that.I knew some unlimited space host who don't offer to much space for uploaded file and they have also file type restriction.

Its true, but i would stress that the maximum i can really believe being offered for a free host is 100gb bw, and that is a very big strech. I mean sure if 1&1 or Google got up and said they were offering freehosting with more than that then i would believe them,

but you get new members here offering to much, and you wold think i would be better to offer unmetered bandwidth ( as long as you stated in your offer that the bandwidth may not become restrictive on other hostees accounts or something like that.

Also you gotta look at things like free forum hosts, they can offer unmetered BW AND follow it up, so why should it be banned.

Im dead against overselling, but i can understand why mods dont ban it.

I would suggest that a good compromise would be that if you offering more than 100gb b/w and or 20gb space then your offer must be verified, by some agreed upon method ( i personally would still be unsure about a 20/100gb deal but some hosts can just about offer it so ...)

o and underg, im not sure if this is a bit of topic but i had a go at re-writing those guidlines that you posted in the 'how to find a good host' thread.

FWS (unofficial) Free Request Guide:

If you have taken the time to browse these forums a bit before requesting, you will doubtless know that many hosts take ill to people who request large amounts of hosting, especially if they dont need the space they ask for.

The purpose of this (unofficial) Guide is to inform the requester of a few base facts. Please read this, it will put you in good stead when you do request.

Be Polite...
It doesn't seem to occur to most of those who request free hosting, that what they are infact requesting is for someone to provide you with a service
that would, under normal circumstances, cost you money - totally free of charge.

Now you will find that free web hosts don't mind doing this, we would be in the wrong job if we did. However what we DO mind is people who come to these forums and demanding free hosting without any courtesy or thought spared for the provider. As if they consider it their right. Lets just get one thing straight...... Free Hosting is NOT a right !

If you want to know what i mean by this, well that should be pretty obvious:

I want free hosting 5gb space and 50gb bandwidth, I Wont Post2Host and I wont put up any ads, as i NEED to place my own.

I NEED this fast

SO, any offers...?

Be Realistic...

Did you know that thousands of sites open everyday? From the amount of space you are requesting, I'm Guessing you guys all think you are going to be the next Myspace in a Weekend. While i am not denying that you may succeed, something of that size will take years to develop, and you wont be running it off free hosting. The Chances are that your idea has been tried before and you will be heading into a competative market, you wont always be a hit success.

When you are requesting your space and Bandwidth, please consider how much space you will infact be using. To give you a small guidline, one of my newest sites has 150 members, and while admittedly the forum isnt hosted with the rest of my site, ive never used more than 1 GB a month on hits, Uploading images is the only time at which i have used more.

You will Find that hosts will probably offer you more space than you ask for anyway, but if they see you asking for a lot to begin with, they may be less kind.

Finally, i have often found, that ( with a few exceptions, and i am not pointing any fingers!) a host that is willing to provide you with 20gb space and 200gb of bandwidth for free, will probably not be around for very long, I suppose this is also a message to those hosts out there, unless you are Very confiedent in your ability to maintain your service while providing that much, don't offer it.

Facts:

1 GB B/w per month = 100,000 Pageviews

50GB B/W per month = 60,000,000 Pageviews per annum.

One application will on MOST occasions use no more than 1 MySQL Databases
Infact many applications will allow multiple installation on 1 DB

A 15 page website (minus addons) should take up no more than 2 MB

A high quality picture will take up 2 MB while most will take up a mere 70 KB

1024 KB = 1 MB 1024 MB = 1 GB

Frequently Asked Questions:

How much space will I need for a forum? - 100 MB MAX

How much space will i need for a Picture forum? - Assuming you dont all have $700+ Cameras then no more than 500 MB - If your Cameras are that powerful then you should be changing the pictures to .GIF anyway

How much will I need for phpNuke with full addons? - 100 MB MAX
(the same applies to most other CMS scripts)

How much space will a personal site with few Logos/images use?
- 5-10 MB MAX

My site gets 300,000 PageViews a Month how much B/W do i need? - To be safe I will say 5GB MAX for other figures see the guide earlier on in the post.

How Much will a Flash file Use? - 50 MB MAX (i've never seen one that big and that includes games)

I want to host direct downloads for my site, how much space will i need?
- Forget it. Get out your Check Book.

Still unsure about something, ask the person offering to host you, they will be more than happy to help you out.

I hope you found this guide useful to you.... (happy host hunting:p)

Regards,
AMChost

Said perfictly...
However,
I do unmeterd bandwdith why stating quite clearly on signup that it dont mean unlimited bandwdith and befor you could get to 1TB of bandwdith you would mostlikley be abusuing the servers cpu/ram etc.....

With oversellers they dont state this by saying you get 1TB of bandwdith the users REALLY think you can use it without a hassel witch makes it just wrong.....

Unmeterd bandwdith ISNT unlimited bandwdith ffs when will people get this through there head it just means bandwdith isnt what? guess????
METERD thats right!

I know unmetered isn't unlimited....and if it's metered, the notion is, there's no way to limit it.

If there is, it wouldn't be unmetered.

Well, if you really think it works, then use a html archiver and copy like.. 5 gigs of google's cache onto your harddisk, then upload it =)
