SEO for fansite

Suppose you have a fansite like mine (Elisha Cuthbert FanSite)
1. How do you promote it?
2. How do you optimize it for SEs?

Probably exchanging links is a good way, right?
What kinds of sites do you link exchange with?

And submitting to directories is another way
Which directories are better for fansites?

Plz mention any other ways you know

I always try to get links with similar sites, and I make sure to put a link in my sig at every forum I'm a member of. Also, advertise it wherever permitted, and submit it to every possible search engine.
