I notice that there's a small drop down at the bottom of each thread that says "Rate this thread". Also, in the thread listings, there's a column that says "Rating".

Is there a requirement a certain number of people to rate a thread for a rating to appear?

I wonder what happens if the rating goes too low..

would I get banned if the rating goes too low? or if I start several low rated threads would vB automatically ban me?

Three votes is needed until the rating is displayed. Threads with high ratings will get more attention and that's the only reason for having the ratings system.
