I saw that many companies use rackshack.net servers. I want to replace my current reseller account with a server from them. Is it worth buying a server from them ? And also are there better places to get a server ?

Hi desperado,

Rackshack is a very reliable company, if you want to learn about them read these posts at wht: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/searc...=1558163&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

There are alternatives to rackshack, some of them are: http://www.nocster.net/ , http://www.rackspace.net/ , http://www.unitedcolo.com , and http://www.server4you.com/ . The sites I listed are fairly similar to RackShack but if you want more hosts and information check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ since they specialize in paid hosting services.

Some of the best budget servers (Rackshack's Pricing, etc) are at www.servermatrix.com They are located in one of the best DC's in my opinion, Nac.Net. Go with them you will not be disapointed.

May I add, those servers are unmanaged, meaning if you don't know how to manage it, secure it, and patch it, fix it, etc.. it would be better to stick with reseller account or get a managed server :)

ok,

Let me start with saying they usted to be Very reliable in my opinion.

That was until they started doing the major work on their new datacenter.

Since then, I have gotten slow report times to reboots, and techs don't know what their talking about half the time. Once, I had the tech update a ticked over 5 times in a 10 minute peroid saying, "oops, i am sorry, i got mixed up"

Lets see, i have noticed higher latency since they started offering 700 gigs bandwidth with ther servers. But that really is no problem.

The major thing that turned me off with going with them, was a Hard Drive problem this summer.

My main server was just fine and dandy, no issues nothing. I saw the load was a bit high, so I decided to upgrade to a gig ram for 2 of my servers to get it out of the way all at once.
I spefiyed if possiable to wait til after hours around 10 pm when the servers were at lowest peak of usage. I put that upgrade request in at 8am before i went to bed. I woke up at 5pm noticed both servers were offline.
I'm like, morons started upgrade during prime time. Well, whatever.

box #2 was reported being up, i loged on, and saw no aditional ram was installed. I sent in trouble ticket. box went down again, 2 hours later that one came up with the correct ammount, and ticket said that ram was not inserted properly (come on here, not that hard).

The box #1 was still down. I put in ticket for update. they said investagating.
Hour later, it was back up. I log onto ssh, and bwamo, crash..... I put in trouble ticket. box goes down. 12 hours later, i recieve a responce We would like to swap our your hard drive. Appears to be faulty.

I say ok, but place the current primary as the secondary so that i can transfer the data.

No sooner than i transfer the data to the new drive, then, it crashes again. I send in trouble ticket. box goes down, 3 hours later they say it's the hard drive. I am like, this is bullcrap. They swap out the new drive for another "new" drive. I transfer the data again. Halfway thought the transfer. GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!

Yep. AGAIN! So I literally DEMAND a new server, and that they place the orignal drive as the secondary to transfer the data.

Ok, data transfers fine. running great. Then, I realize they forgot the ram upgrade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Total down time for server #2, about 5 hours for just a simple ram upgrade.

Total downtime for server #1, over 2 1/2 days. NOT ACCEPTIABLE!
Especially for how manny servers I have their.

I have one server at United Colo for over a year now. NEVER, Not even 1 issue with the server, and that server is loaded. Fast responce times from them always. even better since they were bought out.

Since then. I have been fazing them out for everything but High Bandwidth needs. I have started hosting all my servers on location (which is much cheaper than leasing one).

That is all, sorry for ranting. Sometimes I am dumbfounded by these things....

Chris

ServerMatrix is a sister-company to ThePlanet, therefore the datacenter is in Dallas and not in New Jersey as Nac.Net is.

Really? I was under the impression that ServerMatrix (ThePlanet) has their servers in the Nac.Net DC? Interesting. Still, it is in a nice datacenter anyway.

ThePlanet uses ThePlanet datacenter in Dallas. RackShack is in Houston. Nac is in New Jersey.
