um...256 KB * 4 = 1024 KB -> 1 MB

Well, actually, there's a problem :
some ppl claim that 1MB = 2^20 (in power of 20) = 1 048 576
and others say 1MB = 10^6 = 1 000 000

i like the fisrt one more
though many hardware companies use the latter

when you buy a HDD its space is given in the latter way

That's because Hard Drive companies like making their hard drives seem like they hold more than they actually do.

1MB is equivalent to 1048576, it's not a claim. But to make things easier, people usually just say that 1000000 is 1MB.
