Need some help

First off, thanks to everyone who takes the time to help me out.

Second, I am as wet behind the ears when it comes to page building as they come or damn near. Be forwarend though, I may ask for alot of help since I dont know many things.Hence the name. :D Also important for anyone helping me is that this is strictly a fun, time wasting, yet serious site in which id like to get my work out there as do lots of other people that will be involved contributing to my site.

First things first...I want to build a site
similar to this .... Maybe not quite as simple but similar.... I would like mine to have alot of the same features such as nice guestbook, simple messageboard,@my-site.com email, easy updating feature, simple though working chat room, pop up banners rather than banners at the top but its not to big of a deal and some personalized banner(s). Most of that isnt a must but all would be nice. I also want my own .com/.net and if it is at all possible - for free. My own .com or .net is a must.

As far as space im going to use, I figure ill have a site which is similar in size to the site above which I posted the link to although I want a much more elaborate front page. As far as links from the front page go, i probaly will have around the same amount if that helps any.

I really like homestead because there services is helpful, advertises for you(search engines..etc), tools seem fairly simple which is a MUST and all around seem like a good service EXCEPT they charge you to much.

If I can all of this for free then I would be willing to pay between 10-50 dollars annualy/yearly for my site.

Ill add more info as its needed, though thats the basic info.

Also please explain in as laments terms as possible as I am a simple guy who doesnt get these big, unused words. :p

BTW, Came here from fanhome.com...Nice people there suggested this board. :)

Thank you VERY,VERY much!

Sheesh mate, have patience! Let the majority of members here get some sleep!

Give it a an hour or so and you will be bombarbed with replies ;)

Welcome to the forums in the meantime :cool2:

Alright, I'll try...

Nice Guestbook - I'd suggest http://www.bravenet.com 's services. While they have an ad on it, their services are very easy to use and fairly customisable as well. And they're free! :D

Messageboard - Hmm... If you're not too sure of what you're doing I'd have to suggest http://www.ezboard.com Also free! :D

Also you can get a free chat room from Bravenet..

About the free .com/.net address - this is a bad idea. You won't actually own your domain, and after a year's free service, you'll be forced to pay - and severely ripped off. If you still want a free one, however, go to http://www.namezero.com .

You could host it at http://www.angelfire.com for either their free or paid services.

Hope that helps, even if it's only a little bit. :)

Good luck!! :D

Thanks much for the links and info +chips!

Any guestbook is fine so ill probaly go with bravenet one.Have to see the chat room before I pass judgement on it though.

About the free .com addy....Would you suggest buying as domian for a cheap price which all are from what ive seen around $10 a month??

Thanks but no thanks on the angelfire but im looking strictly for my own domain-not affilated with tripod, angerlfire or otherwise just for the simple fcat that I would much rather have a suchandsuch.com addy.

Thanks again, Appreciate it.

I think ill be going to bed now though, need some sleep after seeing some many new thingys today! :D

Not sure about copyrighted, I have heard a few horror stories recently about people who have trademarked words like freebies and trying to wipe all freebie sites off the net

But it IS yours!!!!! :D

Doesn't it just mean that the domain is yours until it expires, but the name itself isn't yours unless you individually get copyright for it... And even if you do, that doesn't stop someone registering a domain using that name - does it? I mean, if it weren't already taken (Which I'm 100% sure it is), I could register harrypotter.net regardless of copyright.

What I said over at FanHome was $9 a year, not a month. ;)

Registering means you get full control of the domain, there's nothing else to pay beyond that as far as the domain itself goes. Once you've got the domain registered, though, you still need hosting. In order to have pages show up as yoursite.com/yourpage.html you'd have to find a host that offers "domain hosting"... but otherwise you can still find free domain forwarding to have your domain redirect to the location of your site. (Like if someone typed it yoursite.com they'd be sent to freehost.com/yoursite)

I'm trying to think of decent domain hosts. I'm guessing from the example site that you don't need much space -- no file archives or anything, just HTML and graphics. So that'd probably mean you won't need too much data transfer either.

Maybe http://www.netfirms.com ? They should have enough space and data tranfer on their free plan, plus they offer a webmail account at your domain free. Although, they have banners, and I don't know if they have an option to switch to pop ups or not.

Anyone know of something similar to netfirms that has pop ups instead of banners?

free domain forwarding is not really what im lookin for although last resort would be an option which I am far from.

Netfirms.com seems like a good place for me although im still open to better suggestions and the banners shouldnt be a problem.Yet I couldnt really tell whetehr or not that was good or bad. :D

BTW you all dont even know how much I appreciate all of the help. For the first time in awhile of trying to get things set up to start my site up until now really it seems ive been treading water but im feeling great about it now that i feel as if I am getting somwhere.

You can register any name you like, but the registry will tell you if it is already taken - and sorry harrypotter.net is not available ;)

I think _all_ harrypotter domains are taken aren't they?

Yes they sure are :)

But if CluelessMike wants a domain name CluelessMike.com is available as is bubbleboo.com ;)

You probably could get a decent start with Tripod or Geocities. They are certainly the stayers in this free area, if you want to put up with their advertising methods.

Then maybe when your site grows, you can switch to paid hosting.

Good luck ;)

Thanks again for all the help and youll surely seem me back here more than likely.

Ive yet to decide on Geocities or Tripod, though im leaning towards Tripod.

:)
