need ftp help! hit counter, too.

When an FTP program asks for the server name,domain name I'm not sure what they mean. Can someone elaborate on this and give me an example.
Also, I'm wanting to put a hit counter on my site & keep coming up with the code on the page instead of the hit counter. How can this be done without going insane?

Server name is basically your domain.

if your subdomain was http://www.example.example.com, you would connect as the server name with: example.example.com

If your domain is example.com, you connect with example.com

You can always you the shared IP address which can be obtained from Cpanel (if you use cpanel)
