mySQL and PHP

I posted this on the other part of FWS forum, but it didn't get much traffic. For the people who did help, thank you but I still need details.....

What is mySQL and PHP? I know that they are a database and a scripting language, but what is so good about them? Examples?

Well I was lookin at books today, and I see you need some windows binery files to be able to "test" the PHP scripts your local system.... Does anyone know where to get these and how to install them?

I downloaded those files, and then I used http://www.webmonkey.com PHP installation tutorial, and then tried a small PHP script, it didn't work?!?!?

This is driving me crazy....
Do you know any other installation tutorials? Anybody?
