Low-cost hosts & reliability

Bernhard, congrats on making the step away from free hosting, but with paid you also need to be wary. Not sure who #3 was but did that happen to start with "A" too ;)

I haven't heard of the other two, but member ukhost seems pretty cluey on UK hosting, hopefully he will pop in to advise.

Is there a specific reason why you want a UK host?

If you're after a UK host, I'd recommend taking a look at:
http://unitedhosting.co.uk/

Although probably not as cheap as the hosts you were looking at, they have a very good reputation and can offer reasonable prices due to their servers being located in the US.

On another note, when going with a relatively unknown host, don't pay yearly just in case it all goes wrong.

Even though my site is bursting at the seams (it spans over several FWP) I don't know if I'll make this step at this point. Currently I'm doing some research to find out if my expectations regarding paid webhosting are realistic at all. From what I've heard, some low-cost hosts a bit like second-hand car dealers: Low prices, a lot of promises and a nightmare after you've "signed the contract". Or they even disappear after a short time, leaving you with no site and less money....

Nope, it started with a "5"...but the fact that it was censored probably answers my question about the reliability of their service :) Their plans sounded a bit like the offer of a certain webhost that starts with "I" (that usually gets horrible reviews).

Payment is another problem...I don't have a credit card, nor do I plan to get one :)

I'm not necessarily looking for a UK host...I think more or less all cheap hosts have their servers in the US anyway.

Thanks, I'll check them out! :)

I don't know anything about aventurehosting.co.uk but I think a host that still has their 'christmas special' notice up that ended two months ago can't have that great support response time either.

I currently use http://rcthost.com ... support is awesome when you e-mail them (helpdesk takes at least a day, though), you can pay through PayPal, there's no contract and they've got a special going on now, 1GB space, 5GB bandwidth, $50/year (lock-in price) :)
