How does Shoutcast Hosting work?

Hi,

I'm an owner of a hosting company and I bought a Shoutcast reseller but have no clue how shoutcasts work...

What is the bitrate for? Whats a slot?

Can someone please explain before I have to consult google or even yahoo answers? :eek3:

Why did you buy a Shoutcast reseller before you knew how it worked and then came to a forum asking how it worked? Tsk tsk tsk.

Anyways, Bitrate is the rate in which audio is streamed across the internet. Like on CDs the MP3 format or FLAC or other formats they all have different numbers for how high the quality is.

A slot is the number of slots an internet station can have for people listening. 1 slot = 1 person.

If you have a regular hosting company, you might not be able to find the suitable customers for a shoutcast server since that is a bit of a different market

The bitrate is the rate of data transfer, and you will generally find that they higher the bitrate is, the better the sound quality. You also have different audio formats that can be used - with Shoutcast, you can use MP3 or the far superior AAC+ formats. Stream hosts don't generally charge extra for customers to use the better AAC+ format because it's still using the same bitrate.

The number of slots a Shoutcast server has is the number of concurrent listeners, so if it has 50 slots then it can support 50 listeners at once (the 51st listener will get a 'Server Full' error unless they are from a reserved IP in which case some other unlucky listener will get chucked off the stream).

As CaroNet, it is a different market but it may be worth searching through your customer domains, see if any of them look like radio stations and contact them.

As far as pricing goes, it's a good idea to see what others are charging and set your prices depending on the quality of your reseller service and which part of the market you're aiming for.

1 slot = 1 listener.
Bitrate = rate a "host" or DJ or Mixer can stream at. example. 32kb/s mono, meaning streaming the sound at 32/kbs should have different quality as if 128kb/s mono.
note: mono is one sided audio, unlike stereo which has left and right. but results in better bandwidth usage.

Bad bad bad... You better learn the music buisness fast. Especially learn about licenses, if you don't plan to get sued or anything for streaming copy righted material. :)
