Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign.

The SavetheInternet.com Coalition is a real grassroots alliance of organizations, citizens, businesses and bloggers that have banded together to protect Internet freedom.

The Coalition believes that the Internet is a crucial engine for economic growth and free speech. We are working together to urge Congress to preserve Network Neutrality, the First Amendment for the Internet that ensures that the Internet remains open to innovation and progress.

From its beginnings, the Internet has leveled the playing field for all comers. Everyday people can have their voices heard by thousands, even millions of people. The SavetheInternet.com Coalition -- representing millions of Americans from all walks of life -- is working together to ensure that Congress passes no telecommunications legislation without meaningful and enforceable Network Neutrality protections.

I think we, as webmasters and web hosts should do our best to help stop this bill from passing. This will affect all of us if it passes. Call your senator or write to congress.

Maybe congress needs to explain what free speech really means :S

Basically, it's when you're still in your car, and the hooker is perched up against your rolled down window, and you're just discussing the potential business merger, as it were, before you go to the hotel and pay to get herpes. That conversation beforehand is free speech. So it's best to make it count.

Hi All

The problem from the start has been that no one really controls the internet! And let's face it... all governments hate not having control!

However this attempt by certain US companies is not so sinister I think!

Having read a few articles about this "Network Neutrality" I believe it is an attempt by the big companies to make some more money. What they are trying to do is limit what you can access for free. It is believed by some that they will try and make the internet like cable TV. You pay extra for different levels of "surfing freedom"

From a government point of view - it is inevitable that more and more legislation will be brought against the net. They love control!

On the bright side - we are now living in the internets wild west days.

Anyone got a shovel - there's gold in them there hills!!!

Best Regards

Baz
