Give me some idea about dedicated servers

Hi..

I am a reseller now, I would like to put my hand in Dedicated Servers. My Server & Linux knowledge is limited. I have lot of queries in my mind. Due to that I should go for a fully managed server.

My budget is very less (not more than 50$ to 60$/month). Any minimum configuration is Ok. But I need all the softwares pre-installed, like Linux, Apache, PHP, Cpanel, WHM, etc. etc.

I don't know what to do with that plenty of space & bandwidth, except to host couple of my forums. Do u have any idea?

Your suggestions and resource links are highly appreciated.

If you are only after a few forums its best to go with a reseller not dedicated for the simple reason is:

cPanel needs paying for,
Fantastico i think is an extra and also needs paying for.

But linux/apache is usally pre installed.

Companies in the uk charge 30 pound a month for such services.

Remember some companies charge the set up fees for dedicated servers and they require you to do cPanel updates and protect the server yourself i find.

Personally unless your lookign to set up a hostign company your best of just starting with a reseller account of your own which will not totally take your allocated budget.

Regards

Darren

You'd be hard pressed to find a dedicated server with Cpanel/WHM for $60/month.

For your prices and requirements, have you ever considered the VPS root? A VPS (Virtual Private Server) acts very much like a dedicated does as it gives you full root access to your server and also has guaranteed resources partitioned for you. Many VPS providers also include Cpanel/WHM and offer more support to beginners to managing a server (depends on provider).

Although I have never used a VPS myself, here are some providers I have read good things about that are in your price range and don't offer excess space and bandwidth that you don't know what to do with.

even with unmanaged server, your budget is too low. So, yes, VPS is your solution. Let us know how many GB of space and bandwidth do you want? And how busy are your websites?

I'd suggest a VPS too, or setup a local 'virtual machine' to experiment with. I'm just guessing but I'm assuming what you want to do is learn it rather than use it for more sales just yet.

You can get software to allow you to set up a virtual machine or use something like BootMagic and just use a portion of your HDD space and setup linux on it.

The one problem that is still there is WHM/Cpanel license although you can request a trial which you can install local to get a bit of experience at the level a dedicated needs.

And just to echo everyone else your budget would be too low for a dedicated.

Hope it helps at least a bit :)

Peter65, if you can raise your budget up to $80/month, just got a special package for you:
PIII 1Ghz / 256MB RAM / 20GB HDD / 300GB bandwidth
running DirectAdmin, and fully managed.

Let me know if you are interested.

Guys, thanks for your replies.

Even my current Reseller account is more for me. I have 30 GB bandwidth but I spend only 20. I have 3000 MB space but I use very less. Still the reason for planning Dedicated Server, is just a matter of learning things.

But it seems you all suggest the correct thing, that I must first try VPS then I should go for Dedicated box.

If I don't find a good & supportive Dedicated server provider, I will be going to a VPS.
