Geocities to end FTP on free sites

The warez problems are becoming serious.. i have staff deleting warez sites 24/7, and they seem to re-sign up and re-upload files faster than we can delete them.. Its really sad, but warez sites (actually the warez files) are the reason for most of the limits that free hosts place.. and now even those aren't helping.. :(

Oh you bet it's gotten bad. We dont delete 24/7 as we have automation in place that detects it for us and we delete them in batches with a single click of a button, but some still get through, so we go thru and kill off the warez that gets through about once every couple of months. We have our Warez Team that does that. They pull all sorts of stunts to get through...which is also the easiest way to detect them...like when they take a zip/tar and put gif header in it to make a tiny 32x32 image show up for a 500k file..hehe, that is by far the easiest to have a program auto detect, and you can kill them without worrying if you are deleting something that's legit. I have even had warez masters threaten to sue me because I deleted them while disregarding their disclaimer.....which I never saw anyway since it was the system that deleted them :D (Ok, so I hit the button, but I didnt see their sites).

I cant believe these little script kiddies are that damned stupid to even think they could sue us for deleting them for doing something illegal. Come to think of it, I cant believe they are so stupid as to even email and think we would actually start shaking in fear over their silly threats... I can just see them bragiing to their elementary school playground buddies " I sent them a letter threatening to sue, they wont delete ME again! Mommy, I need my diaper changed again!"

Do you guys really think it's warez that caused geocities to disable ftp though? It's equally likely I believe that they simply are getting desperate to try and convert people to their paid program.

I think you're right on both accounts. However, it's naive to think that anyone would want to pay for such a mediocre service.

The only reason I was sticking to Geocities is cus they have those stats stuff for every page you create so I didn't have to create 50 accounts on stats pages to see the stats for all 50 pages. But now that they're getting rid of FTP service I think I'm going to switch to something else...

...erm, anyone know of other free hosts who offers that service?

Do you really need stats services? I don't even track hits on my main page anymore. I believe that keeping track of stats on all pages is just too annoying and should only have to be done if your site is a commercial site, in which case I would highly suggest paying for hosting.

You know, you people amaze me. While other webhosts come and go quicker than Bill Clinton unzips his pants, Geocities has stayed. You all moan and groan about how your host is unstable, or slow, yadda yadda yadda and then you slam on Geocities..Amazing. Geocities is more stable and more reliable than most free hosts out there--And they have been out there longer than anyone. I have had a website with them for almost three years now and rarely have I had a problem. Until someone can prove there is a better web host out there that can surpass Geocities' longevity and reliability, stick to what you know, please.

Peace.

Yep...they're stable:cool2:

...but those intruding ads...Is there a way to fool Geocities into thinking the ads are displaying?:biggrin2:

Wow... free hosting is getting worse than I thought! No more FTP at geocities...

Although, mind you... every one i've ever known that had a site hosted on geocities wouldn't know how to use FTP if you gave them a tutorial that explained it to the letter.

As for warez... I don't know why ppeople bother with warez sites with programs like morpheus and stuff around. Half the time warez sites are just stashed with dead links, ads, and porn.

Whereas with file sharing programs, you type the name, click click, and you're downloading. Not that I'm advocating warez downloading... I'm just saying I don't understand why surfers would bother with warez sites.

== yahoo ==

Yahoo is desperate.

They fired all the management that had any internet experience and hired 'older business types' as the news feeds say.(meaning management now probably never used a computer)

Total nothing but business education.

Where does free fit in?

Geocities was FUN until Yahoo took over.At least as a newbie I liked it.

As to stability is there anything more irritating than free hosts who open and close the next day? 99% never even give warning. I'd bet close to 100% of hosts listed on this messageboard have disappeared over last few years. Now theres the ones...free website hosting as of 3/02... how long?

Hey..if you offer free hosting like geocities how you gonna make people pay except make the free version miserable?

Yahoo is a business. Its stockholders want maximum return. I'd bet they are dead because due to their desperation they are making things more miserable every day.The EMAIL is plastered with more ads every time you go there. They got their numbers by the 'free'.

=== but if your gonna pay the new chief idiots come out with plans that you get better most any other place. To make the pay so inviting even a set-up charge?
