Dynamic DNS

i really have no idea on how to use dynamic DNS ...
i want to understand how to set up my computer for it and how to set it up for the internet ...

can someone point me in the direction i need to go so i can understand it as well as give me some free providers?

I am not certain how to do this as well, but I do know you need an additional ip address to host a domain on the box. I know that http://www.zoneedit.com is a free service that will provide you with the necessary IP, I'm sure people here know some other places as well and how to configure your box. ;)

http://www.dyndns.org/
This site should be able to answer part of your questions. By signing with them, they allow you to register a "sudo-domain name", which doesn't have to be registered, so you can have a URL you.dyndns.org and it will redirect to your computer. You will need to have a running web server on your computer, such as the APACHE web server, or even this one from AnalogX: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/sswww.htm
and you will have to download a DNS client, which can be found at the dyndns site above and it will do the dynamic ip address updates to the dyndns site, so people can find the URL you.dyndns.org.

i would have to agree...
i've used dyndns.org for several years, and the service is impeccable.

also, if your ona fairly stable ip (like less than 2 changes a month) go for their static ip option.

also, i am pretty sure they also offer top level domain support, meaning you can use them to forward yourname.com (this may be a pay service)

i've used them to direct my shoutcast server for years though, without any flaws.
also, you don't have to use the clients to update your ip, you can do it manually via their site (better if your using semi-static)

Actually, you can host your domain for free using dynamic dns from any provider. Just signup for a subdomain from any of the providers like www.dyndns.com then sign up for dns at www.zoneedit.com or whatever and cname *.yourdomain.com to your subdomain under that provider. It's a bit more complicated, but at least it's free!
