well yeah ... all free things end sooner or later
take .com/.net/.org as an example, they used to be free in the 80s and early 90s

as to the cc-tld or "funny domains", they haven't been popular since they were created back in the 80s, but recently they r becoming really popular such as .tv .to .it .ws
which make it no longer free nor cheap

so just an advice, its better to dig down n get $9 than getting trap into one of their fine prints which will make you pay $100 later ... or whatever

oh, btw, does anybody know y icann created a cc-tld for Guam? they are part of the United States

The US Virgin Islands, .vi, are part of America, so is Puerto Rico, .pr, and American Samoa, .as. Country-code top-level domains aren't restricted to countries per se, rather countries, territories, and other general geographic locations.
