8.8.8.8

That's correct. I was told that might be all I need to connect from Vietnam when I get there. Vietnam block certain sites :S

The other one's 8.8.4.4

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-TCP-IP-settings

Skip the IPv4/IPv6 steps, just go to the DNS settings

You could also pick two from www.opennicproject.org

Are you gonna smoke a blunt with the ghost of Ho Chi Minh?

Thanks, the MS one makes more sense than what I've read already, but what happens serverside when I visit? What IP do they see. Nobody has ever logged in here showing 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 for instance.

My blunt smokin days are over :p

No problemo. When you go to a web site, say freewebspace.net, the first thing your computer does is query the DNS server to get the IP address of the server holding the web site. Then your computer connects to the IP address of the server. The reason you don't see 8.8.8.8 in the access logs is because the connection is never actually routed through the DNS server, it's only there to provide information to your computer. The access logs will only contain your IP (or the IP of a proxy, etc).

When you get to Vietnam if you need to find your external IP address for any reason, http://www.whatismyip.org

And waaaa?! Well, more for me, then!

Apologies if this doesn't make sense. I'm fairly messed up on oxycodone because of my wisdom teeth right now.

So in fact it does sweet-f-all then if it still shows the IP you are logging in from?

Changing your DNS servers won't cloak your IP, no. But it does bypass some censorship methods that rely on DNS filtering only. If you want to hide your IP address, too, you need to use an anonymous proxy server or sign up for a VPN service like http://www.IPREDator.se

[edit]
Looks like changing the DNS servers may be enough for Vietnam, but it's a crime, so don't get locked up.

There are several types of website blocking systems used in oppressive countries, but most can be easily bypassed with a bit of technical know how.

1) DNS filtering.

This is the most common type as it is the most easily implemented on the ISP level, but it is also the most easily bypassed. Just change your settings according to instructions at http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ or https://store.opendns.com/setup/operatingsystem/windows-7 to bypass this type of block.

Note: This will still show you as connecting from Vietnam.

2) IP filtering.

IP filtering techniques are more common now than they were before as people have figured out how to bypass the DNS filtering. You can usually use a VPN to get passed these. These range from an SSH tunnel to a server you have an account to all the way up to a paid VPN account using L2TP (beware PPTP).

3) DPI (deep packet inspection)

These are the most difficult to bypass and require advanced techniques to route around. You can find some ideas on how to proceed from the following links:

http://dnstunnel.de/

It can be a good idea to blank your hard drive with a 7 layer wipe then connect using a linux livecd during the trip for proper security. Border searches can be very very invasive.

Thanks Trel. Some of that stuff is beyond me, but I was looking earlier at getting a VPN. I would prefer an Aussie VPN so as not to confuse the Aussie sites too much.

I went to Vietnam last year! Do you know where you're going?

They do block some sites, but likely not the ones you're after. Except for facebook. But that's a stupidly easy fix, all you need to do is put https:// haha

I was in Vietnam in June (HCMC) so I just don't want to battle with proxies again if I can help it. I could google fine, but google maps is blocked which is a pain in the arse if you want to find your way around all the tiny streets with strange names :p I like simple!

How did you like it? I could quite easily move there. Such a simple life and everyone is so friendly.

I went around a large part of south east asia, and Vietnam was my favourite (I stayed there for a month - visa limit.) You've summed it up pretty well in your last sentence, I don't think I met a single person who wouldn't great you with a wide smile and with eagerness to help or be your friend. They don't have any crazy-big employers over there and everybody works for themselves, I heard there was a ~0% unemployment rate because of this. And on top of all that, sub-$150 tailored suits! I'm certainly looking forward to going again.

-- You should get yourself a bike and learn the streets of HCMC. I was only there for a week and a bit but I ended up learning how to get to most things within a mile or so of my hostel. And if you get lost, ask the first person you see ;)

Heh, yeah right! Even the taxi drivers weren't much help. English speakers were few and far between. It was handy if you grabbed a business card whereever you went that had a little map on the back. I plan on printing out enlarged maps for areas I plan on getting to.

Oh yeah we went to a couple of shoe shops there and the staff were pretty good with English :)

I can throw a proxy site/script on one of my servers if that would help you. Your own privat proxy ;)

If you have a hosting account with SSH access, you can use that to make a tunnel. It can easily be done with a software called MyEnTunel.
