Nope username in ftp address doesn't work either.
I experienced the problem as following: When I registered I logged in on their ftp. No problem, works pretty fast too. But after a couple of minutes I can't login on the ftp anymore.
I tought at first it was just a coincidence, but when I've read this forum message....
After all they are not as good as we all thought.
I hope they will repair it, because they make a good chance with the services they bring you to be a replacement for f2s.

MySQL Problem Fixed: MySQL max connections has been changed to 500. MySQL max connect errors has been changed to 10000. This should resolve members having MySQL connection problems. Please try to limit use of MySQL resources. We will try our best to optimize MySQL as much as it can. SSI Problem still not fixed, we appologize for the inconvienance. Anymore issues, let us know. We appreciate comments, because it lets us know that we're making a difference. Tech Support, VD1Techs

i think that they stopped their free services. After you sign up and confirm, your passwords do not work. Also if you check the main page, there isnt any link transfering to the sign up page for the free account !

Well, here is some news for all of you. I just received this e-mail:
Dear Justin Weisman, This is a required service update, Action: Shutting down server, migrating to new servers. Reason: We are closing servers and VD1 network will be migrating to a new servers. Although during migration, we can not migrate free hosting accounts. We are NOT going down because we can't nolonger handle it, since a single server of ours is capable of holding 20,000 accounts and easily do 200 million hits/month with over 4000GB/server and a 10mbits connectivity/server. Thats not the case. We are moving into new more powerful servers. We were currently running Compag Pentium 3 with 1GB ram 40GB HD and AMD Duron 512MB ram 40GB HD. We will be moving into our new servers which are Pentium 4 1.7 GHz, 1GB ram, with 120GB HD. We want something that is pretty much more powerful then a regular pc. During this migration, our service may be down for several weeks. We appologize for the inconvienance. We will no longer offer free hosting or don't plan to until further down the road where our software has been optimized and we optimized use for multiple servers for free hosting. We don't always reccommend using free hosting, since you usually get what you pay for and since you pay nothing for it, you don't get much out of it. Within the past week, we seen over 1500 signups and 200,000 hits to our site. Even though we ran into some minor problems, it had no affect on server performance. Not one bit. ...and no I havent ordered one. I cant stand Headsurfer and wouldnt put a server on his system if it was the last one on the planet. I seriously despise the guy. I wont lie about why either, it's because he is doing so damned well and has been so successful. At least I can admit that... Not that I am not doing well. It's that he found the same niche I had, but he acted on it and I didnt. Now I sit around thinking about it and wondering if my foot can reach my ass.
