Who is using windows 8?

Hehehe, not at you Jan you have my sympathies completely, just hope it's not a machine that is 'built' for 8 if it is drivers can be a bit of a problem.

I have virtual machines running 8/8.1/2012 and really they all suck. There is no actual benefit for any normal user (SME for 2012), in fact the it's more work for no return.

The amount of systems I've rebuilt back to 7 (purchased with 8 installed) is unreal, I could specialise in just that and make a decent living.

One caveat with 2012, if you know how to use Powershell 3 properly to admin and script it's bloody good if you go for the slim core, but then again PS3 works just as well with 2008R2 so again no real win unless there's something in the pipeline, if there is it will cost more and be called 2015 no doubt...

I had an experience to use a machine with windows 8, I used it for 2 weeks, and I really didn't like it. I can't even now understand - what for do I need that start screen-I found it very uncomfortable for a desktop computer. Use windows 98 :)

windows 8.1's interface may be dumb but it works as well as windows 7 otherwise

Edit: meant to say that BESIDES the dumb interface its just as capable as windows 7. Sorry lol.

Must we really have a discussion on the efficiency of the stupid "metro tile" interface vs the classic windows start button menu?

Wouldn't that fall under interface?

Edit:

NVM i worded my post way wrong.

Yeah, and you said a few posts up that the Windows 8.1 interface is dumb, but it works just as well as Windows 7's. ... and I completely disagree that it works just as well, because it's a piece of garbage.

Sorry my fault. Should have read my post before actually posting lol. We are in agreement.

IMO, Windows 7 was sluggish compared to Windows 8/8.1. I am a big gamer and I will say this. Initially some gamers were putting up a fuss about whether Windows 8 was viable for gaming. It's compatible with every game I have played thorough and thorough. And no, I am not going to stop using Windows 8/8.1 because of a start menu that's easily rectified. Overall performance is far better on this operating system in contrast to Windows 7 or Windows Vista. I hated both Windows 7 and Windows Vista. I'm sorry, but anyone who wants to revert back to Windows 7 is being a bit lazy in my book. Especially considering how much better of an OS Windows 8 really is. Windows 8 got a bad rap... mostly from certain Mac users.

^ Yeah and that's about it.
So 7 was an improvement, but they've regressed in quality with 8/8.1? Is that taking into consideration resource usage? Are 7/8/8.1 hogs like Vista was?

Do you know if they made the access controls they tried to implement in Vista more robust?

Ton of questions, ya, but I'd like to stay somewhat informed in the windows world so I don't look like an idiot when I inevitably need to be familiar with it in a business setting.

Windows 7 is probably the best operating system Microsoft has made. XP was great. Windows 98 was great. Win7 is REALLY great. I can't break it. Never had it crash, never had any issues at all. Absolutely love it. It just plain works, which is what an OS should do.

As far as resource usage, it uses as much or less than XP, and considering Win7 was released almost a decade later, that's pretty good, considering all the new "technology things" they had to add. At the end of the day though, I don't really care about resource usage, since resources (RAM, hard drives, etc.) are so ridiculously cheap. We're living in a world where we can get 8GB of RAM for $50, and 3TB hard drives for under $100. So resource usage isn't even something I take into consideration anymore when it comes to an OS.

The problem with Win8 is that they pushed the touchscreen/tablet aspect of the OS WAY too far, and seemingly forgot that there are still people (and lots of them...especially businesses) who use real computers. Windows 2012 (server) is the same BS, as far as the interface is concerned. Can't speak to the stability of Windows 8, because I have never used it long enough to find out. If it's based on the Windows 7 core though, I'm sure it's just as stable. It's just not user friendly for people who actually use real computers still.
