Where's the community?

If you were a free web hostee around 4-5 years ago raise your hand, those were the good ole days. You could get some basic stuff, with minimal ads, friendly support, and a sense of community. Now, with millions upon millions of websites created daily, free webhosts have lost that.

Remember Geocities back in the day, before the premium plans, before it was sold to Yahoo... It was great it had those "blocks" and you were in a category (ex. www.geocities.com/TimeSquare/VideoGames/1123/ ), and you lived with like 19 other "blocks" and you could talk and watch your "neighborhood," and see when pages like your own were updated and email eachother. Where did that go and why? Now Geocities is Yahoo, and it's crap, annoying ads, no support, expensive addons, etc. Before it had GeoPlus members and other cool addons.

What happened to that? And are there any like it still around?

well most hosts die due to Warez

Loads of peepz upped warez to geocities , then geoshitties got wise introducing bandwidth limits .. and then i guess bigger banners to pay for bandwidth :/

And Tripod too, they had "pods," smilar to Geo neighborhooods. What happened to them? Why do all these perks that cost the free webhost nothing to maintain leave? They were all user-moderated.

Geocities might have been bombarded with warez, but why stop the communities and neighborhoods? I hate when people don't face the problem. By deleting those, people who aren't abusing the system are going to leave. And people who want their shorter warez URL address will come screaming. They hurt themsleves, more than helped.

Does anyone know of any free web host still offering the type of community talk about here?

Geocities realized they were encouraging warez abuse, and that's why they removed FTP access as well. Anyway, FWP's that sell out end up sucking, T35.com never sold out and look at them!

Cracker, remember the day when T35.com was a warez top site list?
hey now that you mention it... I sort of remember something like that .. there was also t50.com and a few others... ;)

I guess Geocities and Tripod no longer have that kind off cash to keep those things running. All thanks to those people who upload Warez and stuff like that.

It's sad, because of them there is no f2s.com :(

F2S free would've died anyway, as it has always been obvious that they never really cared about keeping the internet free, and they only saw their free users as a markting ploy and as subjects in a now terminated experiment.

Just talking about Warez, was NBCi on that list. As they offered unlimited webspace etc but closed to the annoyence of a lot of my friends in mid 2000.
What was the reason for that?

Umm...are you referring to the fact that they've sucked since the beginning? :p

Anyway, this new change I hope will make T35 a good host. However, I don't know if I can count on them keeping their servers for long. I mean, they've promised lots the last few times and each time they haven't delivered. And they've gone down at least 3 times since I came here (not even a year)! So until they can stay up for a year, I can't really trust that they've changed. But I do hope they have, and that they will become a good host.

Maybe because a lot of them have chosen to have their own forums. If you like the hosting, join their community via their forum. Hopefully you will still get friendly support. :)
