when the user logs in or enters the site he or she is given a unique identifier number which is hooked on to the URL. This identifier number is actually a mysql database row where all the session information is held. Using this method is faster then regular php sessions and its easier on the server too. Its pretty much a cookie but its stored on the server rather then the user's harddrive making it impossible to tamper with.
