Expired domains

How does one go about getting an expired domain name?

There was one I wanted to register, but it was already registered (by Namezero, grrrr).

However, the expiry date was 30 March 2002.

Since that's been and gone... is it available now? How do I go about getting it???

i think it takes a few months or so for it to become un registered, im not 100% sure

There are no rules for when an expired domain name drop. Some registrars will drop them after 45 days, others will hold them virtually forever. NetSol has some they have held over 3 years and still counting.

You may want to contact the old owner and offer to buy it from them. They would renew with their current registrar, and after 45 days you can transfer to another registrar.

Or you could buy a reservation on the domain from someone like SnapNames or ExpireFish and hope to pick it up when it does finally drop.

namezero domains seem to drop in a reasonable timeframe after they expire.
