What would be the easiest and cheapest way to register a domain name anonymously?

I don't mean for any illegal purposes or spamming purposes or even for anything real serious. But, for example, say I wanted to register and put up a site called SmokingIsGoodForYou.com (which is not available, btw) and just wanted to avoid hate mail or even just avoid being associated with it, is there an easy way to do that?

Another example could be for political reasons, like DemocratsSuck.com, but, honestly, I would not pose the question out here in the open if I were thinking of something really covert. I'm not wondering about protection against law enforcement, just the general public.

Any ideas?

Pay by money order. Use a fake name/address, use a webmail account (hotmail, yahoo...). Of course using a fake name/address is against the TOS for .com/.net/.org. I believe you have 15 days to respond and correct the info if anyone complains.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Thanks!

See, this guy was (ostensibly) running for congress in a district near me and running radio ads. I almost hate to mention it, but we do have intelligent people here, so anyway his radio spots were all anti-semetic (sp?) and gov't & media conspiracy, etc. The site is realnews247.com. You can check out the whacko if you want, but I'm definitely not here to promote it. In fact, here's what brought the question to mind...

I did a whois on the domain. It shows a real email address and real name, etc., for the real "candidate." Sure, go ahead, check out the site, then do the whois yourself, and email him what you really think.

Anyway, my thought was, why would a guy open himself up to ridicule and humiliation like this. If I wanted to do it, even as a JOKE, I wouldn't want to be able to be found!

I, just like the weird dude, have some strong opinions about some things that may not be popular. And I wondered how I would go about setting up a site if I didn't want everybody & their brother to be able to find my house or attack my family...

So thanks for the input! I may never put it to use, but I just hadda know, ya know?

Thanks again,

GoDaddy just started a private registration thing, they register your domain under their name, but you still have full control over it. It costs extra, but pretty cool.

RE: GoDaddy private registration

Excellent! That's exactly what I meant.
http://registrar.godaddy.com/dbp.asp
Your new or existing domain is registered in the name of Domains By Proxy -- so its information is made public -- not yours.
You retain full benefits of ownership. You can cancel, sell, renew or transfer your domain; set-up name servers for your domain and resolve disputes involving your domain.
The patent-supported registration and email handling systems let you manage and control all postal mail and email addressed to your domain, as well as your domain's contact information.
And your domain is safe -- it's insured against loss by The Hartford Insurance Company -- AND backed by Go Daddy's guarantee!
But don't even think about using a private registration to transmit Spam, violate the law or engage in morally objectionable activities.
FYI, it's US$5/yr + reg. fee...

Thanks NovaWo1f!

You do know that peoples domains have been taken because they provided incorrect registration info?
