I have domains with 000domains.com and dotster, and I think both are good. Dotster is slightly more expensive, but its domain manager interface is very nice.
With 000domains.com (or other OpenSRS reseller), things are easier because you can log in from any reseller and manage your domain...
If you need great support, I'll suggest http://www.hostmatters.com They have fast & great technical support. Many of their customers also actively answer your questions in their help forums. Other host would be http://www.hostrocket.com and http://www.below10host.com

This is my comments: Honestly I've never seen job ads that requires PHP skills in the newspaper, all companies want ASP. On the other hand, people in many forums recommends PHP. Seems like we're living in 2 different worlds, huh? :) If you know Windows programming maybe ASP won't be so difficult...

Why don't you take a look at Hostmatters? I've been with them for about 4 months. Support and connection have been great so far. I think their Mini or Basic plan should suit your need just fine.
Another option would be using redirection. If your favorite host doesn't support domain hosting, use services like zoneedit.com to redirect your domain
http://www.sitepoint.com has a good PHP and MySQL tutorial by Kevin Yank as a start. If you want to buy a book, I would suggest 'Beginning PHP4' or 'Professional PHP Programming'. Both are good, but 'Prof. PHP' is more advanced than 'Beginning'. Download PHP manual and look there if you need to...
