Where are the good guys?

When I first joined this forum, I was motivated as offers keep coming in. Even though I couldn't capitalize on this offers, I had the feeling then that the good guys are on here always willing to provide you free hosting services for your websites.

This days I've discovered that many of those people who respond to your post are actually perverts who are busy posting into other people's post in order to improve their ranking on here.

It is a pity that my commitment in school had not allowed me reach my potential as a web enthusiast who is nurturing a great deal of zeal to make a positive impact on the web. Though I wont give up this zeal knowing the challenges are meant to be while I'm still in college and all will be well after school.

But if you know you aren't no host provider, do not be a pervert into peoples' post making they feel they are talking to someone who can help. Though it helps you increase your rank on free webspace, but ultimately you are actually killing a budding desire.

I'm sorry if this post seemed to be aimed at anyone, but I felt I had to reveal my mind. afterall this forum is for us all.

Honestly, I think it's the other way around. It isn't that there aren't good free hosts out there (there are), it's that the free hosting requests have become completely ridiculous. If anything, it's the requests that have driven away the hosts.

Sure WSWD, I'm fed up looking for free host honestly. If they are not asking me to be posting into some forum, I will be restricted of content. Even when I offer to place a link back, I won't even get a hosting account with good enough features.

I guess I am one of the people that you are talking about. As WSWD said requests are insane.
I am not a webhost (anymore) but I do provide some free hosting here on FWS from time to time to high respected members or to projects that I find interesting.

Sander k, I suggest you read my post towards the end. You will know that I'm not talking about anybody in particular. What I'm saying is that things are quite different from when I first joined this forum. The good guys seems to me to have disappeared.

I know someday I will be able to get a proper paid host for my project. I know for now I can make do with localhost and may'be if I get a positive response from one of the guys that've offered me free hosting before but which I couldn't honor because of my commitment in school. Though, I'm leaving in a place where you must be really dedicated if you want to succeed in the IT field. I won't give up still until I get what I want.

I'm still around and people still do have hosting from me.

But between the sheer volume of spam signups I get, and the ever rising abuse rates, the only people I actually do approve accounts for are the ones that I've talked to about it.

For the most part FWS has become overrun by bots, and bot-like characters who do nothing but reply to weeks-old threads with the same generic offer that is only barely allowed.

And most of the users who are looking for a reasonable exchange are gone. Linkbacks don't pay bills unfortunately, you need to offer either forum posts or ad banner space for a hosting plan to be sustainable.

Well thinking out of the box, maybe it's time for a total Website makeover? I'm thinking for example of two Review Committees consisting of volunteers/older statesmen of this Website with their wealth of expertise and experience, and setting up a quality review system whereby owners who offer space and the requests for space are properly quality tested according to a set check list BEFORE they are put up in the Forum as offers and requests. That way a QUALITY service is provided to those who offer Website space and those who need Website space, and hopefully it will start to attract more quality along the lines of quality attracts quality.

For me the most valuable resources here are the members with their years of specialist experience in the business. I'm sure if the review committees are made part of a detailed step by step check list and check process bias would be kept to a minimum. I think the junk requests are making people depressed here and aren't good for the morale. They are also crowding out the quality requests and offers. Almost like spam that is being tolerated.

I'm more experienced with using free Website space, so I can picture a Website Space Request Committee going through two stages. The first one is a Sub-Forum that is only accessible by the members of the committee and where members get to comment on the Website request and whether it is reasonable or junk. If it is junk it gets thrown out without further consideration. If it makes that first stage, it could then be given to a member of the committee who actually visits the Website, signs up and checks out how it works according to a set check list. Ditto the Committee on the Website owner side. There is a first check stage where members of the committee comment on the offer in a restricted sub-forum. And then if it passes that stage someone gets to check it out in greater detail. At the end of the checking the Committee discusses it again in a closed Sub-Forum and it then either gets returned to the owner/Website space requester for revision, or if it is viable as it stands, posted up in the appropriate Forum as a formal offer or request for space.

So what do you suggest? Can you offer me space if I display your banner on my site?

Hey lad,

Not all hosting companies are bad, its just a few that let a lot down.

I do agree that hosting companies have started to disappear due to the sheer volume of spam or abuse the free hosts get.

I have had my company since 2007 and i have seen most things from spam to the FBI contacting us due to a bank look a like site trying to gets customers details.

To try and limit the abuse we get we have got rid of our .com domain and now have only a .co.uk account.

There are some good guys out there :)

I agree with WSWD. At first, there were a lot of what you would call "great" free hosting services. But then they got abused and so their services ended. Now what's left is only hosting providers wary of the consequences of offering free hosting that's "too good". The demands for free hosting are unrealistic.

You're not paying for anything; the host is (for the servers, etc). Why would someone deserve great hosting, for free?
Personally, I think the best free hosting out there are sponsorships made out of threads in this section. At least from my experience, these sponsorships are made with hosts who aren't mass marketing themselves as free hosts, but are still willing to give out their services for free to people and projects that deserve it (such as WSWD and Sander). In the end, these partnerships are really the pinnacle of free hosting nowadays.

A lot of people looking for free hosting care only about the "specs": disk space, bandwidth, addon domains, databases. But I think the most important part of free hosting is the specs of the hosting itself: uptime and speed. Usually free hosts mass market the above "specs", but are extremely lacking on uptime and speed.

I actually intend to launch a free hosting service sometime later today that focuses entirely on uptime and speed. This severely compromises disk space and features, but I think for a lot of people, that doesn't really matter. It's going to be great :)
If you guys want a preview of the service, feel free to PM me and I'll give you the link.

Good luck!! Would love a preview. :)

Cool. I'll release it probably in a couple of hours as I put together last-minute changes and make sure everything works. Since we're launching that soon and you're not online, I won't be sending you a PM (actually, I think I sent you one earlier this week regarding the service). :)

Blame it on the scriptkiddies who distribute and share "phishing" scripts so that anyone can troll and try to steal Twitter/Facebook/Bank passwords.
