A lot of people in my family have died of cancer, its rampant in my family. So it hits very close to home for me.

I know of one person that uses cannabis to supress his adrenal cancer from taking over his body and killing him. So far, its the only known treatment. Thankfully he recently won the legal right to use his medicine: http://cannabisculture.com/articles/2587.html

I can understand a certain reluctance of using cannabis as a cure, but there is just no reason why the studies should not be extended and if they remain successful, used on patients (if they so wish).

Yes, you would still risk lung cancer from marijuana smoke, it contains on average 50% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than ordinary tobacco smoke, but the article's not talking about smoking marijuana per se, it's talking about direct THC injections-- but you can see that's the angle people are going to try and take it.

This reminds me of a very humorous quote from one of the Straight Dope books. It's talking about a different use for marijuana, but it fits this situation perfectly. Let me see if I can find it... here it is:

"Our deforestation problem! Yes, absolutely, hemp is a perfect solution. I myself can recall thinking as a youth (puff) that we've got terrible deforestation problems these days (puff). What can we do about them? (Puff. Long pause.) What was I just talking about?"
