Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz vs Athlon 3800+

Hi,
I am in the hunt for a new server, and have narrowed down my choices to either a P4 2.8 Ghz or an Athlon 3800+. With both having the same price and same specs (2 GB Ram), I'm stuck between which one to choose.

I need the server for web hosting purposes only.

Thanks in advance.
 
I'm inclined toward the P4 for the only reason that I never see AMD CPU's in servers except for the Opterons.

There are plenty of hosts using AMD CPU's that are not Opterons especially for dual core although Intel does seem to be the most popular when it comes to servers. I myself offer them although I wouldn't really say they have anything over the newer Intel Core 2 Duo's.

Between the P4 2.8 and the AMD 3800+ however I would definatley go with the AMD due to the higher speed and you have made a good decision in going for that I would say.

Up up, AMD. But they aren't long lasting when compared to Intel Pentium but they do have good performance. But if you are buying a dedicated server over the internet your host would replace it.

Why makes you make the comment that AMD are not as long lasting? My Athlon XP1800+ has been running 24/7 for the past 4yrs without any hiccups so I am quite surprised by the comment.
 
Yeah, Athlon's are as good if not better than P4 in most areas, and stability and longevity are certainly two of them.
 
Athlon in this case is bertter than the pentium.

But always remember...that right now.. Core 2 = PWNS ALL AMD CURRENTLY MAKES.

Bring me some benches if you think you can refute that claim.
 
Of course, have to agree with you. However, P4's and Athlon's are still ruling the server market, and I havent seen many providers other than the likes of a2b2 and Cari.net offering them yet.
 
Yeah I'm glad Softlayer is finally carring the Woodcrest Xeons. SO now I could order those. Now I'm waiting on them to carry the Core 2's. The 930's are very nice...but I like the Core 2's.

I think you are a wee bit on the confused side ... :confused4

AMD is long known for being more durable than Intel processors and
they usually have a lower heat dissipation and higher overclockability.

Under stress failure tests, AMD is almost always the clear winner
and the result numbers generally aren't anywhere close with the
AMD processors far outlasting the Intel processors before failure.

It's only very recently and I mean like just this year that Intel has finally
started putting a little bit more durability in their processors.
 
For home use, i have a pentium 3 sitting around still alive whereas an AMD Athlon 1400 is already dead. Maybe AMD has improved over the years? :confused4

Wasn't it up to the old 2800 or maby even the 3200+'s that had that horrid over heating problem? The old Athlon XPs I believe it was. I don't believe AMD had any reliability awards until they got rid of the XP series.
