FBI says sudo all your servers are now ours.

Pretty much the FBI was investigating something, and without any of the usual procedures or even clear evidence went in and took a server right out of a colocation.

Except they got caught bringing it back, and even took the time to turn it back on.

But just the fact that they can take a server like that without any clear reason why, that is extremely dangerous for our freedoms.

They have done this several times. All sorts of articles over the years of them doing this. They show up with the badge, nobody in the datacenter is going to stop them.

"freedoms" - what freedoms?

Exactly. We haven't had them in a long time, and this just shows why.

But it was pointless for them to take the whole server. If they were concerned that there was something on it that would help their investigation, all they would have had to do is make a copy of the hard drive. RAID1 makes this super painless- the server already has multiple copies inside, they could just remove a drive and put a replacement into the server so that it can rebuild the RAID. Total downtime of 20 minutes or so.

Taking the entire server for several days? I would call that overkill, and would not trust that machine afterwards.

It's much easier to just walk out with the server. Why waste time and effort with all the drive copies?

Agreed, the authorities do not give a damn about the server downtime.
All they care is just to find evidence to nail people up with the easiest way.

Hmm. I wonder if it was a server they suspected was linked to Wikileaks, or if it had pictures of a certain political power with their pants down...
