Embedding .mpg files into sites?

Hello guys,

I was wondering if i'm able to embed a .mpg video into my site, lets say, onto a page, using, let's say, Windows Media Player (or Flash, RealPlayer, or something along that line) ?

Do I need to convert those files first? Or am I able to just go stright and upload my .mpg video onto my site, using WMP (for example), to play my Video?

You want to embed a DVD file into your site? That doesn't sound very feasible. It should be possible though if the required player and codecs exist on the person's PC.

If you want to stream, convert it to FLV. If you want normal video, convert to WMV.

Any good .VOB to .WMV converters to recommend? I know there's many out there, but there's far from many if we're talking about good ones.

To be fair, you'd be easier using a FLV player. Since not everyone has the WMP browser plugins, they all have flash though.

Exactly. I always host them elsewhere such as Youtube.
Also, when I am doing a design for a client who wants Videos on their site, those videos are also placed on Youtube unless they request otherwise.

It depends. The quality of a video uploaded to youtube is only that much. It can go higher if you convert the video and host it yourself.

I don't really like the fact that when I post it on youtube, anyone, I mean anyone, who searches for anything relevant to my video, would be able to view it. I mean, not that my video is Private or anything, but I like it being hosted on my site, where most of the guys who view it, are guys who I gave the link(s) to.

You can set the video to private on youtube :S That removes it from searches and only people with direct links will have access to that video.

Screw Youtube, Megavideo! Still stick the video within your own FLV player though.
(You can also do the private thing, where direct link only is how you view.)

Thanks for that Suggestion. Will KIV.

FLV player plays all video files? Do you have any to recommend? (In terms of players, etc)

I use WinAVI for my conversions. Works great, and scales well one 1, 2, and 4 core systems. Uses your system RAM, and your GPU as well if your GPU supports the specific algorithm (such as x.264 encoding). Costs some money but well worth the price to me.

Will try that out.

Thanks guys for your help. Will reply back in awhile with results.

This one, http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player/

The way you get the video link is, use Firefox, get the plugin "Live HTTP Headers" upload your video to Megavideo, then once you open the page in Firefox Live HTTP will start to display the GETs and such, you look for the FLV video link through the huge list, copy the link, enter it into the FLV player code, and you're done.

You're recommending me to use the aforementioned program to play my Videos?

Can it play MPEG-1 videos?

That's the flash player, which will play the videos. It plays all files the SWF can support. The thing is, when you upload it, you want it to be compressed as much as possible. If you use filehosts (Which I suggest you should, and do the hotlinking idea.) they will be converted to FLV videos, which are smaller, lose some quality but not alot unless you've already compressed it yourself.

Right now, I'd say something like SupernovaTube. They don't encode their video links. Megavideo does. I tried myself before but it wouldn't work. The flash player wants a direct FLV link.

Example:

Original Link: http://www.megavideo.com/?v=KACRF8ES
Download Video: http://www430.megavideo.com/files/70c39c0f369e8331622759f5db61fed6/

With SupernovaTube it's:

Original: http://www.supernovatube.com/play.php?viewkey=61f56eb30127ae50d0c8
Download: http://sntube.vo.llnwd.net/o28/s/s/21071.flv?e=1238598514&ip=62.31.93.70&h=82402dc4b7520d844ba0146980cb38b9 (Remove)

Or even Vimeo. You'll have to check their TOS to see if you can upload your videos. HD, Direct links, fast speeds.

Original: http://www.vimeo.com (First video, Memory Bank.)
Download: http://bitcast.vimeo.com/vimeo/v/87/17/24/87172449/87172449_31.flv?e=1238602178&h=02a954a84355bd86d3bafedabf751efc (Remove)

edit: Is it just me or are those download links now not working? I swear they were before, I even downloaded them. The JW player just says "Video not found", but Vimeo gives me a 400 error.

Ok, let's sum it up.

1. I use JW Media Player (Meaning, I install it into my site)

2. I'd upload the video to SuperNovaTube

3. Then, I get the direct FLV Link, and embed the code into my site.

Right?
