You can buy some on DP, but there is no need to buy any if they don't come with a website.

Can be, but I wouldn't, well you could when you make one with exactly the same catogory or you will loose PR fast if the domain has any.

It hard to be free of cost because usually old domain do charge in certain price on their value. Unless those domains in black list then they may just throw out for free.
That if that domain were used for hosting some websites.
If the domain was just purchased and not pointing to anywhere, it won't bring any traffic anyway...

If the domain has not been banned by Google and doing SEO naturally, that is another plus too aside from its age.
