Oh jeebus.

I guess I'm lucky I have the appearance of an apathetic teenager, so I'm never hassled by US airport security / "randomly" searched.

Although I'm surprised they didn't think it odd the last time I flew (about a month ago). I had no checked baggage on a one-way flight, a backpack with two changes of clothes, and a license plate.

You know. I had just seen that in my google reader not more than 30 seconds ago :p

Thanks for the input.

Worst thing I've taken on a plane are fireworks. Small ones, mind. It was just after the plastic bottle bomb scare going from W.DC to London Heathrow. I'd forgotten they were in my back pocket from mucking about earlier in the day.

I'd be interested to know what reason those people had for carrying fake IDs on a plane; that's pretty suspicious behavior. Clearly, though, TSA's algorithms need just a bit of tweaking :p

I have only flown once in my life, and it was a hassle.

I was escorted out of the first airport because stupid me left a knife in my carry on bag. I just brought a backpack, and I had been camping not too long prior to my trip. Long story short, I thought I had the bag completely empty, but it has like a zillion pockets and a knife was still in one of them i didn't check. They threatened me with arrest but let me go after being escorted out. I am sure they could tell I was a "nervous traveler" as the article suggests. Once I got escorted out, I threw the knife in the gutter and came back thru again (the TSA agent told me to put it in my car - I hadn't drove). This time thru a completely different TSA agent pulled me aside for a random pat down search.

On my way back from Tampa, I go to the airport there and have to have 2 TSA agents check my ID. Then I go thru the metal detector, don't beep, but then as I walk thru, I hear, "Could you step right here sir?" I was being singled out again, this time I had to get an X-Ray in this big tube thing to check myself for weapons. The dude doing it asked me like 4 times if I had any weapons on me, I kept assuring him I did not. Then I had to wait around about 4 minutes while my x-ray was being "reviewed".

So yeah, I understand the first time, the knife was my fault and I got lucky I didn't get arrested and questioned like they threatened. But Tampa was just annoying. My name must be on some terrorist list somewhere ;)

The way back is just stupid.

I wonder if they made a note next to your name in the system that you had a knife on the way down?

I've flown so many times and never, ever been hassled. The only time I was remotely hassled was, upon arriving in Australia, the customs agent rooted through my medicine to make sure I didn't bring anything I didn't have a prescription for. All I had was like dramamine and tylenol ...
